Penylan Country Lodge Kennels and Cattery provides pet services for clients from anywhere in the United Kingdom not just Newport and Monmouthshire.

We have clients coming from Carmarthen, Herefordshire, New Forest, Devon and even Sussex, we do not discriminate.

If you do not have transport we have 2 Licensed vans which we can use to collect and deliver your pets for their holidays with us. There is an additional charge for this service, contact reception for a quote.

Dogs – All dogs must be fully vaccinated against:

  • Canine distemper
  • Canine parvovirus
  • Infectious canine hepatitis (adenovirus)
  • Leptospirosis

In addition, Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccination is compulsory under Monmouthshire County Council licensing requirements. This vaccine is not included in the standard “core” set, so you must specifically request it from your vet.

Please note: while we require kennel cough vaccination, no vaccine can offer complete protection. Due to the virus’s incubation period of up to 10 days (similar to colds or flu in humans) and the existence of multiple strains, it is still possible for a vaccinated dog to contract a different strain. This risk is beyond our control, but vaccination greatly reduces both the severity of illness and the likelihood of spread.

Cats – All cats must be fully vaccinated against:

  • Feline      panleukopenia virus (FPV)
  • Feline      herpesvirus (FHV)
  • Feline      calicivirus (FCV)

Your vet may also recommend vaccination against feline leukaemia virus (FeLV), which we encourage for extra protection.

Important: All vaccinations must be administered according to the manufacturer’s guidelines, and you must bring your up-to-date vaccination card with you at check-in. For the safety of all animals, we cannot accept pets who are not fully vaccinated.

Absolutely. The welfare, safety, and happiness of pets in our care is our highest priority. Our team provides feeding, playtime, and attention every day. We also use CCTV and detailed care records to monitor your pet’s wellbeing. Many of our customers have been boarding with us for years and know how much we care for their pets.

Please see our Terms and Conditions section 8.2 if you haven't used our services before.

Yes — there is always at least one member of staff on site overnight. In fact, all of our directors live on the premises, so the site is never left unattended. This gives you peace of mind that your pet is safe and monitored around the clock.

This depends on the nature of the illness. For the safety of all animals in our care, pets with contagious conditions (such as kennel cough, stomach upsets, or skin infections) cannot be admitted until they are fully recovered.
If your pet has a non-contagious, managed condition (such as arthritis or diabetes), please discuss this with us before booking. We will work with you and your vet to decide if boarding is appropriate and how best to support your pet’s needs.

If your pet becomes unwell, we will always try to contact you first. If we cannot reach you quickly and treatment is necessary, we will authorise our trusted vets to treat your pet straight away.
You agree to cover any veterinary costs, medication, staff time, and transport fees. Your pet’s wellbeing will always be our top priority.

We provide a range of high-quality foods for both cats and dogs — our current list is available on our website. Please note that all foods are subject to availability and can be found in our Kennels and Cattery section of our website.

If your pet requires a specific diet, you are welcome to bring their own food with them. Please ensure we know exactly what it is and how it should be fed, so we can continue their diet consistently while they are here.

In a kennel environment, some pets can be more reluctant to eat or may need extra food to maintain their weight. By knowing your pet’s usual diet in detail, we can support them properly and make sure they remain healthy and comfortable during their stay.

All dogs staying with us are exercised twice daily in our secure paddocks (weather permitting). On days of heavy rain, we use our large gravel areas for safe exercise instead.

The length of time in the paddocks depends on your dog’s age, health, and breed, but is typically 5–15 minutes per session. This ensures they are stimulated, safe, and comfortable without over-exertion.

You can also book extra off-site country walks for an additional charge. These are available for dogs over 1 year old who do not have behavioural or medical issues that could place themselves or our staff at risk.

If your dog is not suitable for country walks, you can instead book 30 minutes of additional field time at the same rate, with a dedicated member of staff.

All additional activities are optional extras and do not replace the inclusive daily paddock sessions. They are subject to availability and environmental conditions.

Our priority is always your dog’s safety and wellbeing. As standard, dogs from different households are exercised separately in their own secure space.

However, if you specifically request social play, we can assess your dog’s temperament, health, and suitability. If we are confident it is safe, we may pair your dog with another compatible dog (or small group) for supervised play sessions in our fields.

This option is only available where it is in the best interests of all dogs involved, and is always closely monitored by our staff. If at any point we feel it is unsafe, your dog will continue to enjoy individual exercise sessions.

Yes, you are welcome to bring familiar items such as toys, blankets, or bedding to help your pet feel at home. Please note these are left entirely at your own risk, and we cannot accept responsibility for damage, loss, or injury caused by them.

When you make a booking, you’ll receive a booking confirmation which shows an estimated cost. This is based on the details you entered at the time of booking.

Final charges are calculated at the current daily rate at the time of boarding, as set out in our Terms & Conditions. This ensures fairness and consistency for all customers, as our published daily rates apply equally to everyone.

The balance is always confirmed and payable on collection of your pet.

Just like with any service or purchase, the balance for your booking must be settled before your pet is collected. This is standard practice across the boarding industry and ensures fairness and consistency for all customers.

It’s very similar to how you wouldn’t leave a shop with your shopping before paying — the same principle applies here.
